Telling the Story of the Language and Literacy Education Department (and People) - AI Workshop
On the afternoon of September 30th, the Department of Language and Literacy Education at Taichung University of Education invited Chang Chia-Tse, the owner of Mei Fa Dang Loo Shang Stuido and lecturer at the Asia University, to hold an academic lecture titled "Telling the Story of the Language and Literacy Education Department (and People) - AI Workshop." The workshop allowed students to unleash their creativity, learning how to create comics, storybooks, and podcasts with AI. Students were encouraged to use their own experiences and emotions, employing diverse media and ingenuity to tell the stories of the department and people, becoming spokespeople for the Department of Language and Literacy Education.
In an age of rapid technological advancement, AI has become an indispensable aid in our lives. During the lecture, the instructor taught students to use two AI programs, Google AI Studio and Gemini, to upload images, issue simple commands, and have the AI generate images accordingly. The instructor guided the students to modify a character's expression, clothing, and angles, ultimately producing a manga-style image. Students displayed surprise and excitement as they added their favorite idols and creatively manipulated different styles and expressions.
Later, the lecturer demonstrated AI-generated storybooks, even with audio readings, showing the advancements AI has reached. There are many diverse ways to present these achievements. AI is a tool and a medium for people, while inspiration and creativity still originate from humans. The AI workshop is a stage for students to show their creativity. Narrative expression is a crucial language skill. Combining students' professional skills with diverse ways of expressing their experiences and emotions will undoubtedly create a different kind of spark compared to traditional narrative methods, better showcasing the unique characteristics and ingenuity of each work, and better capturing the audience's attention, immersing them in the story and moving them emotionally.
As the lecture drew to a close, the chair of the Department of Language and Literacy Education, Zhou Bi-Xiang, mentioned that the lecturer had previously demonstrated the results of AI restoration. She also shared the story of her grandmother, who, deeply attached to the place where she once lived, experienced declining physical and mental health. She later used AI to restore the three-section compound. This story created a quiet atmosphere, yet left a lasting impression. AI not only helps people break through the limitations of their creativity, but also restore what has been lost. As the Chairperson mentioned, AI can also help people bring back their memories and make up for the regrets.
Through this lecture, students not only learned new narrative techniques but also experienced different AI programs, knowing their strengths and weaknesses, and the skills to operate them. At the end of the event, the students expressed their deep appreciation and believed that this experience will become a crucial skill for them to show themselves and connect to current trends.
