NTCU Anniversary Series Events of the Department of Language and Literacy Education's“Leisurely Exploring Taichung” was a Great Success.
This year, our department participated in the “Leisurely Exploring Taichung” cross-school elective course organized by the Taichung City Government for high school students in the first semester of the 113 academic year. The main course arrangement is the calligraphy class, a specialty course of this department. The theme of the course is: “The Snake Brings Luck – Fun Experience of Writing Spring Couplets.” It leads students to understand the beauty of calligraphy in an interesting way of practice writing New Year’s spring couplets. It is expected to arouse students’ interest in calligraphy and implement it in their daily life.
The course was taught by Professor Chia-Hua Liu from our department. He first introduced calligraphy with a presentation and a video, explaining how to use a brush and write calligraphy, so that students could master background knowledge and practical skills before actual writing practice. During the process, the main calligraphy styles practiced were regular script (kaishu) and clerical script (lishu). From imitating (“mo”) to “copying” from originals (“lin”), the basic concepts of calligraphy were gradually established for students and their confidence in calligraphy. Some students were using a brush for the first time, but their enthusiasm for calligraphy was evident. During class, they listened attentively and practiced diligently. When writing their spring couplets, they sought feedback and guidance from the professor. After the event, many students stayed to discuss calligraphy writing techniques with the professor.
Although the course lasted only three hours long, which wasn’t enough to fully appreciate the beauty of calligraphy. Students were able to pick up their first brush and write calligraphy. This aroused their curiosity and interest in calligraphy. Completing their own spring couples, not only achieved the goals of this course, but also left the students happy and satisfied. They look forward to similar and engaging hands-on courses in the future.
